From flour factory to dynamic district

On the banks of the Zaan, a new future is being built; one with respect for the past, perfectly combining industrial heritage and new construction. The robust industrial area that has been in use since 1865 is transforming into an open, dynamic and inspiring neighbourhood, where living and working go hand in hand. Zaankwartier will soon offer space for approximately 650 homes, such as single-family homes, industrial loft apartments, social homes, mid-range rental apartments and apartments for purchase. The location is simply amazing: right on the water with great views of nature, within easy reach of Alkmaar, Zaandam and Amsterdam. Zaankwartier is all about connections and togetherness, where lively spaces alternate with relaxing greenery. Existing monuments are given a new purpose, ensuring that Zaankwartier’s new future is built on the solid foundation of a rich past.

Plenty of commercial spaces

Artists, supermarkets, hospitality businesses and self-employed professionals will have plenty of space to grow and to realise their ambitions. Together, they will provide a perfect mix of amenities, providing convenience and vitality for the benefit of the entire Zaankwartier district.

Hotel or shortstay apartments

The designers are considering whether this imposing landmark can be transformed into a boutique hotel or perhaps short-stay apartments.

Living

Living in Zaankwartier means living in a neighbourhood based on reusing industrial heritage. It offers the perfect combination of existing and new, historic and modern. A cosy mix of affordable rental and owner-occupied residential units and industrial lofts that is accessible to everyone.

Sustainable

Zaankwartier also takes the surroundings into consideration. For example, the plan uses sustainable construction methods and pays attention to biodiversity through the creation of green structures that attract birds and butterflies. Special facilities have been planned for sparrows, starlings and swifts. In addition to the abundant natural surroundings, cyclists, children and pedestrians will have plenty of space in the low-traffic heart of the Zaankwartier. Two central parking facilities give drivers a place to park their cars.

Amenities

Zaankwartier also has plenty to offer when it comes to amenities. The designers have thought of everything from daily groceries to cosy restaurants. And last but not least, this new neighbourhood meets contemporary housing needs. Considerable attention has been paid to the mobility and the life cycles of the Zaankwartier residents, so that they can continue to enjoy their homes even as their circumstances change over time.

History

Zaankwartier is an area with a rich past going back to 1857, when Wessanen & Laan built the steam oil press De Tijd, followed soon after by the steam flour mill De Vlijt. In 1992, the company’s grain division came into the hands of Meneba, which began producing bakery raw materials and supplies there. Many thousands of Zaan residents have worked here over the past three centuries. The site exudes the rich atmosphere of its industrial past. And this will continue in the future: historic landmarks, such as the Oude Vlijt (from 1898) and the Nieuwe Vlijt (1911) with the boiler houses and the engine room, will be preserved. The same also applies to the characteristic bridges that connect the former factory buildings. They have been integrated into the new plan, which will give Zaankwartier a new future based on a rich past.
